In the Vienna Congress, Federico Francisco de Mecklenburg-Schwerin, joined the Germanic Confederation and was elevated to the title of Grand Duke. The servitude was abolished in the Great Duchy in 1819. The revolutions of 1848 created an important liberal agitation in the Duchy, which relaxed with a series of measures (creation of a basic law), which would be abolished shortly after by pressures of the nobility .
