Description

In 1933, Salazar, already as an undisputed leader of the dictatorship in which the Republic had evolved after the 1926 coup, prepares a new constitution based on the Catholic social doctrine and that configures a conservative, nationalist and anticolonialist authoritarian regime, trying to get away from moving away from The communist and fascist models so in vogue at that time. The government was also configured around a political party (National Union), although Salazar”s intention was really depoliticizing society. In the same year 1933, antisocialist and anti -capitalist legislation was promoted, so while the unions were subordinated to the State, work and companies were fully regulated, initiating social security programs. Some fascist appearance symbols were nothing more than makeup to improve international acceptance. The fascist leaders were exiled in 1934. After the end of the Spanish Civil War, Salazar disagree more from fascism, for his strong connection with the United Kingdom. However, when the Nazi victory seemed close, there were contacts with Franco”s Spain (closer to the Nazi regime), to avoid an invasion at all costs. In turn, as of 1943, the approach to the allies was clearer, allowing the allies to use the Azores, also mediating by Franco”s regime that I remove from diplomacy to the most Germanophilic elements. Once the war was over, Portugal was a founding member of NATO and entered the UN in 1955. Before the pressures to decolonization, Portugal changed the status of its colonies, to overseas provinces, claiming that they were an indivisible part of Portugal. But from 1964 with the beginning of the colonial wars and the wear of the army, the change that happened with the carnation revolution in 1974 would end up being inevitable.
