Description

Auxerre was an important center in Roman times, being crossed by the Agrippa road. In the S.III it became host of a bishop and later it would also be Roman provincial capital and in the s.v hosted a cathedral. In Tiera Carolingia became a county, and in 859, Carlos El Calvo assigned the county to his cousin Conrado II of Burgundy, but after his revolt he was given to Roberto the Fort. Later he would end up in the domains of Ricardo de Burgundy. In the XI and XII centuries, new broader walls were built that included the entire city. In 1370, Count Juan IV sold the county to France, but in 1435 with the Treaty of Arras, he returned to Burgundy. In 1477 with the annexation of Burgundy, he finally joined France.
