In 1785, the possessions in Sumatra of the Eastern Indies Company (Bencoolen) are placed under command of the Presidency of Bengal. Previously, they were a presidency in themselves. Singapore is founded by Raffles in 1819, associated with Bencoolen, which was broken down in 1823. A year later, the British yield Bencoolen to the Netherlands, in the Treaty of London of 1824
