Description

From 1035 to 1814, the Faroe Islands were part of Norway, in a personal union with Denmark from 1380, but in 1814 when the Kiel agreement is produced by the union between Denmark and Norway (passing this to Sweden), Denmark maintained Both these islands and Iceland (which would separate in 1944) and Greenland. Since 1948 they have self -government depending on Denmark for currency, defense and diplomatic relations. During the mercantilist era, Denmark maintained the monopoly of trade with the islands until 1856. At the end of the 19th century it developed economically thanks to fishing. In 1940, before the Nazi invasion of Denmark, and the beginning of the invasion of Norway, the British invaded the islands in Operation Valentine, and between 1942 and 1943 built the aerodrome of the islands. After the war, the islands returned to Danish control, but Iceland”s independence was a close example and in the 1946 referendum won the independence option for a narrow margin. Independence was proclaimed, but this was suspended by Denmark, since he had not voted for a majority of voters (by counting the abstentions). In any case and to calm the desire for self -government, it was greatly granted in 1948. The coins were coined during the British occupation of the islands.
