Description

Within the empire, he received the city title at the end of the 13th century, being one of the first cities of the Netherlands to receive this recognition. Within the Hanseatic League, it was a prosperous city of the economic engine of northern Europe. The counts dating from the Charlemagne era enjoyed great power, until the family line was extinct at the beginning of the 13th century, gathering with Güeldres. Among the privileges of the city, was to coin currency, which was done until the end of the 19th century. In the 80 -year -old war was besieged and conquered by the Spaniards in 1587 and recovered by Mauricio de Orange in 1591.
