Description
Cambrai diocesis was created in 580, under the Archbishopric of Reims. In the year 1007 they obtain the Cambrai County by the hand of the King of Romans Enrique II. The Bishopric/County will suffer the consequences of the 100 -year War, and in the S.XV it is totally wrapped in the properties of the Dukes of Burgundy. In 1094 in the middle of the complaint of the investiture, he merges with the bishopric of Arra. In 1559 he acquired the category of Archbishopric composed of four bishops, but the reorganization of the Spanish Netherlands, will reduce the new archbishopric in power. In 1686, it will be Louis XIV who chooses the archbishop who will be ratified by the Pope, losing the canons the ability to choice. In 1801, for the Concordat, the archdiocese will lose the entire Belgian part.
