Description

During the Spanish Civil War, the Sovereign Council of Asturias y León, a political entity created by Republicans in the northern region of Spain, issued its own currency to deal with the shortage of means of exchange. The Council of Asturias and León issued tickets known as “Asturian pesetas” or “Leonese pesetas”, depending on the specific region. These tickets and currencies had different denominations, from small quantities to higher denominations, and were used as a means of payment in the area controlled by Republicans in Asturias and León. These local currencies issued by the Council of Asturias y León were mainly used to facilitate domestic trade and transactions in the region controlled by Republicans. However, due to war and economic instability, Asturian and Leonese pesetas suffered high inflation, which led to rapid devaluation and difficulties in commercial exchange. The issuance of local currency by the Council of Asturias y León was an attempt to establish an autonomous economy and show the resistance of the region against fascist forces. However, its scope was limited to the region and did not have a significant impact nationwide. After the civil war, with the victory of the Francoist side, the Asturian and Leon pesetas stopped having legal value and a monetary unification was imposed under the peseta, the official currency throughout Spain.
