Description

After the death of the dictator Francisco Franco in 1975, a transition process led by politicians and representatives of different ideologies and movements began. This process culminated in the approval of the Spanish Constitution on December 6, 1978, which established the basis for the political, economic and social organization of the country. The 1978 Constitution established a parliamentary monarchy, with the King as a symbolic figure and the Executive Power exercised by the Government. The fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens were recognized, including freedom of expression, equality before the law, the right to education and the right to autonomy of regions. In addition, the Constitution established a parliamentary system based on the Congress of Deputies and the Senate, and guaranteed decentralization and territorial autonomy. This led to the creation of autonomous communities, which have competencies in areas such as education, health and local administration. Since the approval of the 1978 Constitution, Spain has experienced a period of political stability and economic development. There has been peaceful alternation of power between different political parties and a strengthening of democratic institutions. The country has also been integrated into the European Union and has experienced significant economic growth. However, the period has also been marked by challenges, such as the coup attempt in 1981, the separatist conflict in Catalonia and the economic, social and political challenges, such as unemployment and inequality.
