Description

After the 1848 revolution, Switzerland adopted a new Federal Constitution that established the foundations of a modern federal state. This Constitution guaranteed individual rights and freedoms, as well as the equality of all Swiss citizens. During the nineteenth century, Switzerland experienced a period of political stability and economic development. Industry and trade were promoted, and the country became an internationally recognized financial and business center. At the political level, the principle of concordance was established, which sought to maintain a balance between the main political parties of the country. This principle was based on the proportional representation and the inclusion of the main parties in the federal government. In 1874, Switzerland adopted a new Constitution that extended individual rights and freedoms even more. A more inclusive democratic system was established, with the introduction of popular initiative and referendum, which allowed citizens to participate more directly in the political process. Throughout the twentieth century, Switzerland maintained its neutrality in international conflicts and became a diplomatic and humanitarian center. During the two world wars, the country remained outside the conflict and acted as a mediator in international disputes. In terms of social welfare, Switzerland developed a solid social security system, with special health, education and social protection. The country became a model of well -being and economic development. In the second half of the twentieth century, Switzerland faced challenges related to globalization, immigration and social changes. However, the country remained firm in its commitment to direct democracy and political stability. At present, Switzerland is still a prosperous and stable democracy. The country is recognized for its neutrality, its inclusive political system and its prosperous economy.
