Description
In 1808 the Portuguese royal family flees to Brazil in the middle of the Napoleonic wars, and Rio de Janeiro becomes the new imperial court. After the war, in 1821 King Juan VI finally acceded to return to Portugal, but leaves his son Pedro as regent of the kingdom of Brazil. In 1822, Pedro declared independence and the Empire of Brazil is established that will last until 1889, the date on which the Republic will be established
