Description

The reason for the first invasion of Algeria in 1830, was a diplomatic altercation, in which the Ottoman governor demanded that France pay a debt contracted in the French Republic (food for the expedition to Egypt). In an outburst, the governor hit the French Consul, and this served as an excuse for the closure of relationships and the subsequent invasion. With the fall of the Ottoman domain, resistances arose to the new French regime, being the most important that of Abd el Kader, which defeated in 1847. France managed Algeria since 1848 as an department of the Nation and hundreds of thousands of Europeans migrated to the territory, benefited by the confiscation of the communal lands and the expansion of possible crops with modern techniques. These immigrants were known in the final period as black feet. The French intention of assimilation of the territory always collided with the opposition of local leaders who lacked political representation or economic status in the colonial system. Many Muslims had fought in World War II, and in 1947, when the Assembly of Algeria was created, they could only vote 50% of the members, being 6 times more population. This situation crystallized in 1954 with the creation of the National Liberation Front, Fln that would carry out terrorist attacks on French interests in France and Algeria. The brutality of the French response, only remarked the Algerian people, and even in France itself I believe even more rejection of war. A blow to Algeria in which several military took control (general leave), and demanded a national unity government led by De Gaulle, precipitated the end of the fourth republic. The Parliament accepted De Gaulle, when the Army Army had taken corsa and had an operation in progress to overthrow the government in Paris if De Gaulle was not accepted. De Gaulle visited Algeria looking for a moderate collective on both sides on which to base a future French Algeria. Gradually, despite the military victories, it was clear about the impossibility of a simple solution, accepting self -determination as a possible option in 1959. These words were felt as a betrayal of the population that resisted abandoning Algeria (each Even more minority) which caused uprisings in Algeria, suffocated with a speech by De Gaulle that faded the opposite military elites, and that created the OAS to avoid the departure of France from Algeria. In January 1961, De Gaulle convened a referendum on the self -determination of Algeria, with majority support both in France and Algeria, but shortly after several generals tried to give a blow that waited for De Gaulle, not getting enough support. This convinced De Gaulle to abandon at black feet. The conversations with FLN continued and the war in Algeria became a conflict between FLN and OAS. In February 1962, Evian agreements were reached that ended the conflict with the independence of Algeria. The OAS tried to boycott these agreements with mass attacks, but FLN did not respond to provocations. With a massive approval referendum, Algeria became independent of France on July 3, 1962.
