Description

In 1684 the English crown took direct control of the colony, and in 1707 with the union of England and Scotland, it becomes a colony of the British crown. Behind the control, was the demand of the islanders, unhappy with the attitude of the company of the Somers Islands, which insisted on continuing with an agricultural economy, despite the loss of competitiveness with respect to the virginia colony . The economy adapted quickly, specializing in the construction of ships and intercolonial salt trade. The American War of Independence brought hunger to the island that was ambiguous between the two sides. After the loss of the thirteen colonies, it became a strategic strength for the British Navy, stop between the British and Canada Islands. In the 20th century, tourism developed on the island. It began in Victorian era, as a destination for the North American elites that escaped from the hard winter, but with the development of transport, it was consolidated as a tourist destination. Of strategic importance in world wars, after the second, a new activity arose that has become the main one, that of an extraterritorial financial center.
