Description

The provisional government of China was established by the Japanese Imperial Army during the Second Sin-Japanese War in 1937. It was created as a tool for Japan to exercise greater control over China and undermine the Chinese nationalist government led by Chiang Kai-Shek. The puppet government was established in the city of Nankín, in eastern China, and was led by Wang Jingwei, a Chinese political leader who had previously been an outstanding member of Chiang Kai-Shek”s Kuomintang. Wang was appointed by the Japanese to lead the government and work in close collaboration with the Japanese to implement their policies and objectives. The provisional government of China had a political structure similar to that of the Chinese nationalist government, with a president, a prime minister and a cabinet of ministers. However, all important decisions were made by the Japanese, who had total control over the Government and the Chinese puppets armed forces. The Japanese puppet government was not well received by most of the Chinese, who saw it as a tool for Japanese oppression and the subjugation of their country. However, some Chinese collaborationists supported the puppet government and worked with the Japanese to implement their policies. The provisional government of China was dissolved after the surrender of Japan in World War II in 1945. Wang Jingwei died shortly after, and the Chinese nationalist government led by Chiang Kai-Shek regained China”s control. The provisional government of China is considered a shameful page in the history of China, and the Wang Jingwei government is seen as a traitor to the Chinese nationalist cause.
