Description
Leopoldo knew how to see how a philanthropist benefactor with interests in Africa, but the reality is that a personal colony had been mounted, based on the extreme exploitation of the population in the so -called “free state of the Congo”, recognized at the Berlin conference of 1885. Excesses and extreme violence used with the indigenous population, forced the Belgian government to take control of the colony, which went on a Belgian Congo in 1908. While under control of the Belgian State, the traditional colonization system continued, based on economic exploitation criteria, and the Missions with the aim of turning the population to Christianity. The economic criteria, exploited the regions in a diverse way, seeking the maximization of the benefit (for example with agricultural plantations in some areas, mining farms in others …) The independence pressures were developed from the end of World War II, and the Belgian Congo achieved independence in 1960 with Patrice Lumumba as the first president.
