Description

After the First World War, the United Kingdom takes the administration of the German Tanzania, which will become the territory of Tanganica. For monetary circulation, the Florin of Eastern Africa was first created, divided into 100 cents, which was replaced by the East Africa Chelin, with 1 Florin = 2 Chelines. This strange system, not based on the pound, was derived from the first monetary unit defined in East Africa was the rupee. The rupee was a silver coin, and La Plata had risen in price during World War I with respect to the pound. For that reason, Florin was equal to the rupee that was in circulation when the value of two “sterling” chelines is reached. The currency was created for use in Kenya, Tanganica and Uganda, although these colonies were governed independently. Kenya as a colony inside, and protectorate (nominally under the Sultan of Zanzibar) on the coast, Uganda as a protectorate and tanganics as a mandate of the Nations Society since 1922, and since 1946 as a United Nations Trust until its independence in 1961.
