Description

The beginning of nationalist movements and its dissatisfaction with foreign intervention in the country, led to the intervention of France and the United Kingdom, fearful of losing its influence in the country and in the Suez channel. In 1882 they defeated the Egyptian army in the battle of Tel El-Kebir, establishing from that moment a British de facto protectorate, although the Egyptian government remained subject to the Ottoman Sultan. The United Kingdom placed Tewfiq in power, Ismail”s son who would be a mere puppet. In 1914 the protectorate would become official, at the end of control (non -existent) Ottoman with the beginning of the First World War.
