Description

Nevers had been a duchy since 1539 and Rethel since 1581. By the marriage of Louis of Gonzaga with Henrietta of Cleves, both dukedoms were unified and would pass to the Gonzaga family. Thus, in 1601, Charles III inherited the duchies of Nevers and Rethel, and in 1608 that of Arches. His subsequent accession to the Duchy of Mantua will begin the war of succession of Mantua, within the hostilities of the 30 Years’ War.
In 1659, Charles IV sold the duchies of Nevers and Rethel to Cardinal Mazarin, becoming known as the duchy of Mazarin.
