Description

The Principality of Acaya or Achaia, was configured as one of the vassal states of the Latin Empire, which was configured as the successor of the Byzantine Empire after the fourth crusade. Guillermo de Champlitte and Godofredo I of Villehardouin conquer the Peloponnese in 1205, and with it the State is configured, as the vassal of the kingdom of Thessaloniki. Guillermo de Champlitte governs until his departure to France, and Godofredo becomes the new Prince of Acaya in 1209. Godofredo was happened by his son Godofredo II, and this by his brother Guillermo II of Villehardouin, with whom the Principality reached its peak. After Guillermo, the Principality passed to Carlos de Anjou by Viterbo”s Treaty, between Carlos, Balduino II of Constantinople (Latin Emperor expelled by the Byzantines in 1261), and Guillermo II himself in 1267. The Angevina family gave the Principality as a fief to several relatives, but they had to deal with the claims of the Villehardouin family, first defended by Margarita de Villehardouin, youngest daughter of Guillermo II, who later passed them to her daughter Isabel de Sabran, married With Fernando, Infante de Mallorca, who conquers the Principality in 1315 and appointed Prince of Acaya to his son Jaime El Temerario. But Fernando is defeated by Luis de Burgundy and again the Angevinos control the Principality. Mutual claims will last until the end of the Principality in 1460 when it is conquered by the Ottomans.
