Description

The Duchy of Athens, was one of the states founded by the Crusaders after the conquest of Constantinople in the fourth crusade. It included Atica and Beocia. The first Duke of Athens, since 1205, was Otón de la Roche, a Burgundy knight of the fourth crusade. The Duchy owed vassalage to the kingdom of Thessaloniki, but after its fall, the agency was discussed. From the Viterbo Treaty of 1267, the Duchy recognized the sovereignty of Carlos I of Anjou. The Duchy was under the control of the Roche family until 1308, in which Guido II died without offspring and the Duchy Parliament, chose Gutierre V de Brienne, for being the son of Isabel de la Roche. Gutierre, contract to the Great Catalan company (which was located in Thessaly as a kind of independent military republic) in 1311 to help him in his disputes with the Byzantine state of Epiro, but when trying to deceive them with the payment, they ended him and they took control of the Duchy. Without a clear project, they recognized the sovereignty of Federico III of Sicily (of the Aragonese family). The Aragonese controlled the Duchy through a general vicar. In 1318/19, the Aragonese conquer the southern Thessaly, and create the Duchy of Neopatria linked to that of Athens. They lose part of the Teros de Thessalia in 1337 to the Serbian Empire. In 1379, the Navarra company, at the service of the Latin emperor, conquers parts of the ducat, and between 1388 and 1390, all possessions go to Florentino control, under whose domain they will remain until 1456 when it falls in a Ottoman power, except for a few years of Venetian control.
