Description

In 1859 the Emperor Faustino I was deposed by General Fabre Geffrard, after the ruinous campaign of conquest of the Dominican Republic. The transition began with a military government until 1867 in which national reconciliation was achieved, and after several governments that did not prosper, in 1874 a new constitution was issued that would mark the progress of the country in all fields in the last decades of the s. The sugar and rum industry, prospered greatly, but the revolts began again in the second decade of the 20th century, causing a growing debt of their banks, which caused the country”s occupation by the US until 1934 (already with Roosevelt) . With the departure of the Americans, the Presidency assumed almost complete powers, and Vincent left power, forced by the Americans in 1941, and in 1946, there was a revolution that put a meeting of three members in power. The next two governments ended in revolts, and corruption was instituted in power. In 1957 Duvalier came to power as a representative of the middle and low classes, but I believe an unprehencing corruption system, which was continued by his son. This system made a large part of traditional elites flee, also creating a voodoo -based fear system. In 1986 he was finally expelled “Baby Doc” by the military, after continuous revolts. After Duvalier, the country has also had complicated transitions between presidencies, being the transition from Aristide to prevail in 1996 the first democratic transition in the history of Haiti.
