Description

It did not exist as such a management unit of Dutch enclaves in India, so the denomination is purely geographical. At the beginning of the 19th century we have the first presence of merchants of the Eastern Indies Company (VOC) in the Coromandel area, seeking to exchange spices of the Eastern Indones (Indonesia) by textiles. They were also established in the following decades in the Surat and Bengala area. After the conquest of Ceylon to the Portuguese in 1656, they also took their factories from the juggling coast, looking for a monopoly in the spice trade. In the second half of the 19th century, the colonies of Dutch India were progressively losing importance and in 1795, all colonies were ceded to the United Kingdom to avoid their fall in revolutionary France. Although most were returned to Holland in 1814 by the Anglo-Holandic Treaty, but they returned to the United Kingdom in the 1824 agreement that ended the disputes around Singapore. This ended the Dutch presence in India.
