Description

In 1871 the Portuguese colonies make a monetary change. The rupe that had been equal to 600 Reis, or 10 thongs went to value 960 reis or 16 thongs. Since the rupee was equal to Indian rupee, this made the tanga equal to the Anna. In 1958, within the policy of converting the colonies into overseas provinces, monetary unit would be changed to the shield. The change is caused by the closure of the local Cecas, which concluded with the closure of the Goa mint in 1869, so the new currencies were imported to Portugal. In 1946, Portuguese India was the first colony to receive the status of overseas province, trying the state of Novo that did not seem like a colony for international law and more when India was about to achieve independence.
