Description

Between 1569 and 1859 with some interruptions, Pisa was under the great Ducado de Toscana, a monarchy that replaced the Republic of Florence. After controlling the entire Tuscany, a papal bull raised Cosme Medici to Grand Duke in 1569, and the Medici Family the Great Duchy until the extinction of the line in 1737. The appointment of Cosme as Grand Duke, generated rejection of much of the European monarchies, including Felipe II and his cousin The Emperor. However, Cosme remained aligned with them in their international policy. At his death, the great Duchy was extremely prosperous and remained to Cosme III that he ended up leading him to bankruptcy. In 1737, the Lorena line would continue with control until 1859, with the exception of the Napoleonic occupation, which would create the kingdom of Etruria under the house of Bourbon-Parma. The United Provinces of Center of Italy, incorporating Tuscany in 1859, and was formally annexed to the kingdom of Sardinia the following year.
