Description

The Revolution of 1848, managed to briefly reinstate the Republic of Venice, which was under Austrian control from the Vienna Congress, shortly after joining the kingdom of Sardinia, trying to cope with the Austrians, but 17 months later Sardinia lost the war, and Venice returned to Austrian control. During the Austrian control, the investment in the area had been minimal, favoring the imperial port of Trieste, and not reinviring tax revenues in the region. The disappointment was increasing both for the lack of interest, and by foreign control itself, which was already beginning to curdle in Italian society, and the news of the 1848 revolts in both Vienna and Milan, precipitated the events. Just as Milan joined Sardinia after the revolt, a plebiscite decided in July to join the Republic of San Marco, but could not last and the Austrians were recovering land once the different revolts were pacified.
