Description

Initially established under concessions of the sultans of Brunei and Sulu, to the German entrepreneur (although representing Austro-Hungarian interests) Gustva Overbeck, this passed its interests to the British entrepreneur Alfred Dent, who established a company for exploitation, obtaining a real title in 1881 and becoming the privileged company of Borneo Norte at the end of the same year. This privileged company disturbed other Western powers, especially Dutch and Spanish, forcing the borders to be clear (the Madrid protocol of 1885 clarified the borders with the Spanish Philippines) In 1888 to avoid the interference of other powers, the protectorate on the colony is established. At the beginning of 1942 the protectorate was invaded by Japanese forces without opposition. The protectorate really had no troops, with the Royal Navy for his defense.
