Description
In 1975, Frelimo took control of the country, with a majority of Portuguese returning to Portugal. Samora Machel became the first president, establishing a unique Marxist party republic. He received help from Cuba and the Soviet Union. In 1977, a civil war broke out between Renamo anti -communist militias and the government that would not end until 1992. These militias had Rodeesia support (until 1980) and South Africa, and in turn the Free from Zimbabwe.
