Description

Curaçao and its dependencies, like all the Caribbean colonies returned to Dutch control with the Dutch Anglo Treaty of 1814 with the exception of Essequibo, Demerary and Berbice. It was managed as Curaçao and dependencies between 1815 and 1828 in which they gathered with the other colonies, Inluxing Surinam, and were managed from Paramaribo. From 1845, they returned to separate management. The prohibition of slavery in 1863 dramatic the economy of the islands, producing a strong emigration to other islands. Until the end of the 19th century, the predominant language was Spanish, subsequently establishing the Dutchman more intensely. The discovery of crude in Maracaibo again the economy, installing Shell refineries in both Aruba and Curaçao. The first desalination plant was built on the island in 1928. The new Constitution of 1936 modified the status of the island increasing self -government, although in practice, colonial control continued.
