Description

The domain condition was granted to New Zealand in 1907, thereby implying effective self -government from the Westminster statute approved by the United Kingdom. However, in 1945, when the country joined the United Nations, it was simply called “New Zealand.” In January 1946, the officials were told the signs to say “New Zealand”, but that they did not make the change public. In 1953, the official terminology was changed to the “Kingdom of New Zealand.” The term “domain” remained in the names of the institutions (the Domain Museum was not called the National Museum until 1972), the companies and in the Constitutions of Clubs and Societies. The name still survives in the title of the Dominion newspaper (now Dominion Post), first published in Wellington on September 26, 1907. Although the term is no longer used to describe New Zealand, the real domain status proclamation of 1907 has never been revoked and is still in force today. Therefore, New Zealand”s formal title may still include the term “domain.” In general, however, the country is known today as the kingdom of New Zealand. In other similar countries, legislation has been approved in both the United Kingdom and the ex-colony to reflect the change of state, of total separation, except for the figure of the monarch.
