Description

In 1944 the Soviet army occupied Romania, hitting King Michael I against the pronazi government of Antonescu that changed the alliances to the allied side. Thus, on August 23, 1944, the king announced that Romania unilaterally ceased the war against the allies and joined the allied side against the axis. Formally, the Soviet Union signed the armistice on September 12 of the same year. Besarabia and Bukovina Norte were incorporated again into the Soviet Union and the country was under the control of an allied commission, which in practice was controlled by the Soviets. The Peace Agreements of Paris of 1947 implied the continuation of the Soviet military occupation (present until 1958). On the other hand, the communists forced the king to abdicate on December 30 of that same year, establishing the Popular Republic of Romania. In this way, Michael I was the last king after the steel curtain to lose his crown.
