Description
The Socialist Republic of Romania spanned the period from 1965 to 1989 under the leadership of Nicolae Ceaușescu. During his mandate, he implemented agricultural nationalization and collectivization policies, seeking the country’s economic independence. However, his government was characterized by political repression, the cult of personality, and megalomaniac projects that put the country in debt. The population experienced shortages and restrictions, while Ceaușescu consolidated his power. In the first years of his mandate, he enjoyed popularity both inside and outside the country, with his speech against the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia being considered the high point. But soon the situation changed, and the economic hardship brought by his policy of megalomaniac projects and personality cult (rationing of food and fuel, lack of medicines…). The 1989 Revolution ended his regime, marking the collapse of communism in Romania and the execution of Ceaușescu.
