Description

In 1961 and for a very tight referendum and only open to white voters, South Africa was established as the Republic, abandoning the Commonwealth. At first it was an electoral system with a weak president, elected by Parliament, but in 1983, a change in constitution allowed strong presidencies. Apartheid became a very discussed topic, both internally and abroad, with increasing pressure. The government continued to respond violently to opposition movements inside. Several countries began applying boycott to South African products and international sanctions began to impose. With the arrival of De Klerk to power in 1989, aware of the fracture of the country and the growing violence that approached the country to a civil war, decides to dismantle the apartheid system. To do this, they begin by legalizing anti-apartheid parties, and allowing manifestations. He also released Anti-Apartheid leaders as Nelson Mandela and stopped the South Africa Nuclear Weapons Program. Subsequently, he negotiated with Mandela the transition to universal suffrage. In 1994, he supervised the elections that led to the National African Congress of Mandela to Power and was vice president of the National Unity Government led by Mandela. Since full democracy, unemployment among the black population has remained high, and the country present high crime problems. The 2008 debt crisis affected the country in importance, and has recently managed to recover the human development rates from the mid -90s. The currency is the Rand.
