Description

The 1910 South African Union, created by the 1909 South Africa Act, created a new domain, that is, a colony with full self -government, although with the head of state in the English monarch, and whose status would be clarified in 1931 by the statute of Westminster, formalizing the full independence of these domains. It was formed by the Cape, Transvaal, Natal and is free state of Orange. In 1913 a first legislation was passed that limits the property of the land by black citizens, although then the percentage of land they had was very little. In 1948, the Nationalist Party came to power, creating more segregationist legislation, separating the inhabitants in groups by color, and creating legislation for each group. This institutionalized racism became called Apartheid. Whites (less than 20% of the population), became a standard of first world life, while the black population had no improvement opportunities. In 1961, by a very tight referendum (only for white citizens), it was approved to become a Republic, and leave the Commonweatlh. The monetary system of this era is based on the South African pound, equated with sterling pound, except between 1931 and 1933, from the United Kingdom abandons the gold pattern, until South Africa does. The emissions would be similar to the British, with the same metals. In 1961 a few months before becoming the Republic, the change to the decimal system with the Rand = 10 Chelines is made.
