Description

The lack of support from the Catalan courts to the effort of the 30 -year war (the proposed union of weapons of Count Duke of Olivares), made this forced the presence of the army in Catalonia for its maintenance. This army, formed mainly by mercenaries, normally caused tensions when it should be staying in the territory itself, and in this case, when the situation was forced, a strong uprising exploded on the day of the Corpus of 1640, which was supported by the president of the Generalitat And for an important group of politicians, who began organizing the revolt, increasing tension with the monarchy. With Ceret”s agreement, they obtained the protection of France, and in January 1641 the Catalan Republic was established that lasted a week until the proclamation of the king of France Louis XIII. The Habsburg response, fearing a bulwark south of the Pyrenees was determined, but the Franco Catalan army reaped an important victory in the battle of Montjuic. The Austrias recovered Barcelona in 1652, although the war continued until the peace of the Pyrenees of 1659. The French attitude of weakening their adversary, rather than worrying about the needs of Catalonia, made the initial fury decline to decline.
