Description

The Independent Emirate of Al-Andalus was a Muslim State that existed in the Iberian Peninsula from 756 to 929. It was founded by Abderramán I, a prince Umayya who escaped from the massacre of his family in Damascus at the hands of the Abasíes . During his government, Abderramán and consolidated Muslim power in the Iberian Peninsula and established the city of Córdoba as the capital of Emirate. The city became an important cultural and economic center, and its mosque, initiated by Abderramán I, became one of the main symbols of the Emirate. The Umayyas in Al-Andalus maintained commercial and cultural relations with the rest of the world and became the hegemonic state of the Peninsula. A fundamental aspect of the Emirate era will be the disputes between Arabs (dominant group) and the Berbéres. The loss of the Berber party in the S.IX will depopulate the Duero and allow Christians to occupy their lands, at this time the transition between the kingdom of Asturias and that of León. Under the government of Abderramán III, the Emirate became a caliphate in 929. During the Caliphate, Córdoba experienced a great cultural flourishing, especially in literature, poetry and philosophy.
