Description

The Kingdom of Spain under Francisco Franco”s regime between 1947 and 1975 was a period characterized by an authoritarian government and a strict control of power by Franco and his regime. After the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), Franco became the undisputed leader of Spain and established a military dictatorship. During the first years of his government, Franco implemented repressive policies and focused on consolidating his power and eliminating any opposition. In 1947, the Law of Succession was promulgated, which established Franco as head of state for life and prepared the way for his succession. This law made Spain a kingdom into theory, although Franco maintained the title of “Caudillo” and retained absolute power. During this period, Spain experienced international isolation due to its authoritarian regime and its neutrality in World War II. However, as of the 1950s, Franco adopted an opening policy and sought to establish relations with other countries. After seeing that the autarchy did not work, finally I leave the economy and the industry in the hands of Opus Dei technocrats who advocated the end of the autarchy and the economic openness with the outside. In the 1960s, Spain experienced a period of economic growth known as the “Spanish economic miracle.” Economic reforms were carried out that allowed the modernization and expansion of industry and tourism in the country. As the 1970s approached, Franco”s regime faced increasing challenges. The internal and external pressure for greater democratization increased, and Franco began to take measures for the transition to a more flexible form of government. Finally, Francisco Franco died on November 20, 1975, which marked the end of his regime and the beginning of the transition to democracy in Spain. Juan Carlos I, who was appointed by Franco as his successor, assumed the position and led the transition process to a parliamentary democratic system.
