Description

The time of the Umayyad governors in Spain, also known as the Umayyad period of al-Andalus, spanned from the Muslim conquest in 711 to the establishment of the independent emirate in 756. The Umayyads ruled as delegates of the Islamic caliphate and established an administration which merged Arab and Hispano-Visigothic elements. During this stage, figures such as Tariq ibn Ziyad, who led the conquest, and Abd al-Rahman I, who founded the independent emirate in Córdoba in 756, stood out. This early period was marked by a certain religious tolerance and cultural coexistence among Muslims, Jews and Christians.
