Description

During the period between 1715 and 1719, Sweden faced a financial and economic crisis due to war and the loss of territories. As a result, emergency monetary emissions were carried out to deal with financial difficulties. In 1715, Sweden was involved in the Great War of the North, an expensive military conflict that exhausted the country”s economic resources. To finance the war and cover the expenses, emergency currency emissions were made, known as “Redukinssedlar” or reduction tickets. During this time, the Swedish government also began to issue copper coins as a temporary solution to deal with financial difficulties. These currencies, known as “Copper Daler” or “Kopparklipping”, were used as a means of payment instead of traditional silver and gold currencies. Emergency copper emissions were made in significant quantities and had a lower nominal value compared to silver and gold coins. These copper coins were put into circulation to allow commercial transactions and deal with government expenses. However, due to the lack of intrinsic value of copper compared to precious metals, these copper coins experienced rapid depreciation and loss of value. This led to an increase in inflation and a decrease in the purchasing power of the population. The emission of emergency copper coins also generated a certain distrust and skepticism among the population, since they were perceived as a temporary and not reliable solution for the financial crisis In an attempt to stop inflation, the Swedish government tried to restrict the use of reduction tickets and establish regulations to control monetary emission. However, these efforts were largely ineffective and the economic situation continued to deteriorate. The economic crisis and the resulting inflation led to an increase in goods prices and a reduction in the purchasing power of the population. This generated significant social discomfort and discontent among the population. The economic situation in Sweden did not improve until after the end of the Great North War in 1721. During the following years, economic reforms were carried out and policies were implemented to stabilize the currency and rebuild the country”s economy.
