Description

With the creation of the Free State of Ireland in 1922, the change of name to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in 1927 was adopted for the rest of the country. The United Kingdom had a very high modernization rhythm in those times of interwar. The same rights to women were granted the same, and television broadcasts began among other achievements. But the crisis of the 29 thugs hard the economy, causing up to two million unemployed. The country had, however, economic capacity and credit to respond and pioneering unemployment insurance, since certain steps had already been taken towards the welfare state. The tension for the rearmament of Germany soon began to be a problem, and above all it was for the government of Neville Chamberlain that opted for appeasement, fattening a Hitler who used Salami”s tactics. On September 1 the war began, and the following year United Kingdom remained alone in the fight, already with Churchill as prime minister, and aligning all the colonies in the war effort. In 1941 the USSR and the US would already enter the war, forming the alliance that would end Nazi Germany. The United Kingdom came out of war, as one of the world powers, but ruined by war. Under these conditions, decolonization was inevitable, organizing the progressive path. Internally, the Labor Party that governed after the war, settled the basis of the welfare state, creating the National Health System, and reinforcing the national industry. The British economy grew in the 50s and 60s, although not to the rhythm of other powers such as Germany. The creation and evolution of the European Community, made the United Kingdom finally requested its admission in 1973, which with continuous tensions, ended up abandoning in 2020. The currency has been the pound, although in the gold standard at the beginning of this period, it had to leave the crisis of 29 as the majority of economies in the world. In 1970 it was decimalized, ending the history of Chelines and Florines as it becomes 1 pound = 100 pence.
